We were scarcely awake next morning when we were roused up to see the fortress of Peter- wardein. Directly above our heads, with cur­ tains, bastions, and towers grinning with artillery after the most approved fashion, was the hill of Peterwardein, and on the opposite side a tête du pont, and other hard-named outworks in great abundance. Semlin is one of those localities which Nature herself has marked out for the position of a town. Count Széchenyi tells us that the Save is navigable, and he feels sure it will very soon have its steam-boats as well as the Danube. From the day of their esta­ blishment Semlin may date a new birth.
